I've used two different techniques on my patches with a machine. A regular straight stitch and a zig-zag type stitch. Both have held up well.
Just make sure to use thread the color of the border stitching on the patch. On the bobber thread, which will be seen on the inside of your vest use a matching color that is same as the liner of your vest.
You also need to backstitch to prevent the stitches from coming unsewn. Backstitching is sewing in reverse and forward over the same stitches to lock the beginning and end of a stitch. Since it is a patch you will end your stitching at the beginning of your stitching...so just backstitch at the end...as the end stitching and beginning stitching should overlap.
You'll also want to use a stitch length of 8 to 12 stitches per inch for heavy material like leather. |

The Bible warns us not to follow men [Jeremiah 17:5, Psalm 118:8],
but to test what all leaders teach with scripture [1 John 4:1-2; Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; 2 Timothy 3:16-17]. |
